Three moves, one less window.
Window Ninja lives in the menu bar and stays out of the way until you call it. No Dock icon, no main window.
1Press Control Option S
The cursor becomes a crosshair and the menu bar icon fills in. Slice Mode is on. Esc, a click or a key cancels it.
2Drag across a window
Straight, curved or an S-bend, in any direction. The window splits along the exact path you drew, the moment your stroke leaves it.
3Gone
The halves fall away with a slash, a crack and a thud, and the real window closes through its own close button. Like a katana through a pineapple.
- The faster you swipe, the harder the halves fly.
- Every sound is synthesized in code. No audio files.
- Slice Mode ends by itself after one cut.
- Scribbles and corner nicks are ignored, and you can try again.
- Your app keeps keyboard focus the whole time.
- Sound effects can be switched off in the menu.

When an app asks to saveThe pieces spring back into place and the save question is left to you.
Dramatic on screen. Careful underneath.
- It never force-quits
- Window Ninja closes a window the way you would: by pressing its own close button. It never force-quits an app, never answers a save dialog and never throws anything away.
- Save prompts stay yours
- If the app asks whether to save, the pieces spring back, the window stays exactly where it was and the question is left to you.
- Your windows stay on your Mac
- The only network request is a daily check for updates at windowninja.io, plus downloading an update when there is one. No account, no analytics. The still image of the window you slice is used for the animation and is never saved or sent anywhere.
- No microphone
- The sounds are generated in code. Window Ninja never uses the microphone and never asks for it, and it doesn't use Input Monitoring either.
- Only public macOS APIs
- No private APIs, no changes to System Integrity Protection, no code injected into other apps.
- Some windows are left alone
- Minimized and full-screen windows, windows with unsaved changes or an open sheet, and system UI are never sliced.
